If you haven't been sleeping particularly well lately, tossing and turning and finding it hard to fall asleep, and waking up half an hour before your alarm in the morning, it might be time to consider whether your mattress needs replacing. Unlike a broken appliance, however, the reasons for replacing a mattress are not always visible and obvious, and in most cases, people only consider replacement long after comfort has been replaced by resignation to deformations and even physical pain.
So, when do you need a new mattress?
The first way to know your mattress needs replacing is the warranty. It's usually around 8 years for single-sided mattresses and 20 for double-sided. But this is more of a general guideline for replacement, and most people use it for many years after it has expired. Often, we don't remember when we bought our mattress, don't keep its documents, or don't feel a tangible need for replacement.
But there are other, more individual indicators than the general warranty. Among these, the signals from your own body are the most reliable.
Lower back, back, or neck pain can be directly related to an expired mattress life. Also, if you toss and turn, have difficulty falling asleep, and need to "settle" into your mattress like a hammock to be comfortable, this also means you should consider a new mattress. If you feel "lumps," if you see visible indentations or bulges – the mattress needs replacing. Other signs of mattress problems include coughing and difficulty breathing, which can be related to a mattress that hasn't been cleaned and retains dust, leading to the development of allergies. Furthermore, your comfort requirements change with age and physical condition. Last but not least, one of the clearest red flags is if you sleep better in hotels and other places than at home.
Below, we offer a quick test that can help you orient yourself better. If you have at least one "Yes" answer, it's time to start researching a new mattress.
- Your mattress has exceeded its warranty years;
- You don't feel rested in the morning;
- You wake up with pain;
- You feel lumps or search for the comfortable spot on the mattress;
- The mattress creaks, and its base is unstable;
- You suffer from a dust allergy;
- You have drastically changed your weight, undergone surgery, or have another medical reason requiring a mattress change.
- When you sit on the edge of the mattress, it forms a smile. But it doesn't lead to one when you lie on it.
When you decide to replace your old, deformed, and worn-out mattress with a new, comfortable, fresh, and suitable one, you will quickly return to the land of comfort and sweet dreams!
Sleepy mattresses will make this wonderful change for you, and you can take steps to extend the life of your new mattress, for which we have prepared a few more tips:
Rotate it regularly. We don't mean flipping it, but regularly (every two months) rotating it 180 degrees, which is recommended, especially in the first six months after purchase. If your mattress is double-sided, always flip it according to the instructions, usually seasonally.
Do not jump on your mattress. Do not put additional stress on your mattress by jumping (you or the children) on it.
Ensure a good foundation. Just as your mattress supports you, it is supported by a good frame and central support. Choose it carefully, and this will extend its life.
Clean it regularly and use a protector to protect it against bacteria, mites, moisture retention, and liquid spills. Mattresses have instructions for regular cleaning that should be followed.
