Frequently Asked Questions When Choosing a Mattress

Questions and Answers – How to Choose a Mattress?

1. What is the difference between a double-sided and a single-sided mattress?

The question itself provides the answer. Single-sided mattresses have only one side, so you cannot choose which side to sleep on. They usually have a firm base and springs. Double-sided mattresses have more advantages than single-sided ones. Some of them have a summer and winter side, while others have a  removable cover. This means that, in addition to being refreshed, the mattress can be turned from one side to the other, extending its lifespan. Another factor to consider when buying a mattress is that it must be placed on a slatted bed frame.

2. What are bed frames?

Bed frames, also known as slatted frames, are designed for double-sided, latex, polyurethane, and all other types of mattresses that do not have a firm base. Bed frames consist of a slatted grid corresponding to the size of the mattress and are placed underneath it in the bed opening. You can find different types of bed frames – wooden and metal. If you are heavier, we recommend getting a metal frame; if you have a normal weight, a wooden one will work perfectly for you.

3. How do I determine the size of my mattress?

If you have not bought a bed yet, when choosing a mattress you should select one that is large enough for you to lie down comfortably without feeling restricted. If you are a couple, you can comfortably choose a mattress with a width of 144 cm, 160 cm, 164 cm, 180 cm, or even more. If you are replacing your old mattress with a new one and will be using the existing bed, you must measure the interior space of the bed where the mattress will fit.

How important is mattress thickness?

If the mattress is too thin, it may cause discomfort, and you may feel the bed frame, especially if you are heavier. These mattresses are 12–16–17 cm thick. They are suitable for single beds, people with a lighter build, and children's beds. If you are looking for a more ergonomic mattress, it is best to choose one that is 17–24 cm thick. There are also much taller mattresses, reaching 30–36 cm. If you like sleeping higher up and feeling as if you are on a cloud, this height may be comfortable for you. The problem with these mattresses is that the taller they are, the higher their price. Tall mattresses are among the most expensive sold on the market.

4. What should a mattress cost?

The answer to this question should be similar to the answer to the question: How much should a car cost? – As much as you are willing to pay! Just as with choosing a car, the price of a mattress depends on the quality, comfort, warranty, luxury, and brand you choose. The average price for a 160/200 mattress is around BGN 650–800 for mid-range to good-quality mattresses. Of course, there are many others that, despite being much more budget-friendly, do not fall short of the more expensive options in terms of specifications. Nevertheless, when considering your budget, do not forget a few basic rules:
1. You spend around one-third of your life on your mattress
2. You replace your car much more often than your mattress, even though you spend much less time in it
3. You can now purchase a mattress in installments without additional costs. You simply pay the installments, while we cover the interest.

5. What is the difference between an orthopedic, anatomical, and ergonomic mattress?
- orthopedic mattress: supports the spine in the correct, natural position and helps the joints relax
- anatomical mattress: helps fully relax the muscles and promotes good blood circulation.
- ergonomics: optimal psychological and emotional recovery.

6. Is it true that firm mattresses are better for you?

Yes, firm mattresses are more beneficial if you are between 1 and 7 years old. It is now outdated to believe that sleeping on a very firm surface is beneficial, straightens the back, and helps people with disc problems and joint pain. On the contrary! A firm mattress is good for you only if you like sleeping on a firm surface.  Medium-firm mattresses are now available that support the body's weight where necessary while also supporting all the body's key pressure points, such as the spine, shoulders, lower back, ankles, and others. This helps the body relax fully while keeping it in the correct position.

7. What is the right mattress for heavier people?

A major concern for heavier people when choosing a mattress is whether it will sag and settle. A mattress may sag if it has springs. Over time, the springs settle, leading to discomfort and wear. Polyurethane foam mattresses are a good option. They have a higher density, contain no springs, and should not settle. If you are heavier, it is best to choose a mattress with a higher density per cubic meter. This will ensure that the foam does not settle.

8. Is there a difference between latex and memory foam, and what is it?
Unlike memory foam, latex has a much more elastic, open-cell structure that immediately recovers after pressure is released. Memory foam, on the other hand, recovers much more slowly after pressure is applied. Latex is highly elastic while still adapting to the body's position. Memory foam easily conforms to the body's shape, but it also has a very dense foam base that provides good support.

9. When do I need a new mattress?

Many of us completely forget that a mattress is one of the most frequently used pieces of furniture we own. If you do a rough calculation, you will find that if you sleep an average of eight hours a night, you spend 3,000 hours on your mattress each year! This means that after 10 years, you will have spent 30,000 hours in the same bed.

In general, the average lifespan of a quality mattress is between 10 and 15 years, which is why it should be replaced after that time. After this period, its qualities deteriorate, and we are no longer talking only about a lack of comfort but also about a real risk of spinal misalignment.

Another sign “screaming” that you need to replace your mattress is waking up more tired than when you went to bed.
If your sofa also seems more comfortable than your bed, head to a mattress store immediately. Focus on what you feel when you lie on your mattress. Do you feel uneven areas or springs? Your body should lie on a smooth surface to feel comfortable and remain properly supported.
