During the first two months, your little baby will spend around 20 hours a day sleeping, so the most valuable thing you can give them is peaceful sleep.
The foundation of good sleep is a high-quality mattress. An unsuitable one can damage the spine, cause discomfort and insomnia, and negatively affect the child’s normal physical development. That is why, when choosing a mattress, you should make sure of several things.
One of them is that it is flat and not too thick. It is important for the mattress to be completely firm, hypoallergenic, and breathable. These are very important factors that you need to consider.
If you already have a baby cot, all that remains is to choose the right mattress.
Here are a few tips:
1. Choose the right mattress size
There is not a wide range of sizes for baby mattresses; they can be 60/120 or 70/140. Make sure it fits your baby’s cot perfectly, so there is no danger of the baby getting an arm or leg caught. There should be no gap between the mattress and the cot frame.
2. Choose a firm mattress
Soft or medium-firm mattresses may seem like a good choice for older children, but until babies can lift their heads, it is better for them to sleep on a moderately firm surface so that their airways remain clear.
With a very firm mattress, the baby’s main support points are the head and pelvis, which puts strain on the spine. A moderately firm mattress helps reduce tension in the muscles throughout the body, provides orthopedic support for the spine, and supports the baby’s proper blood circulation.
When choosing a children’s mattress, it is very important to pay attention to the quality of the materials. Ideally, they should be natural and carry certifications indicating antibacterial and dust-mite-resistant properties. Natural materials do not retain dust as many synthetic fabrics do. When a mattress is used for sleeping, no matter how often it is aired, if it is not made from high-quality materials, there comes a point when it becomes filled with dust from the surrounding environment. That is why we recommend the highest-class mattresses to our customers when it comes to babies, namely the Magniflex Pierre Cardin baby mattress with a cotton summer side and a wool winter side.
3. Mattress composition
When choosing a mattress, opt for one made from high-resilience foam.
Foam rubber is a somewhat outdated technology, and fewer and fewer mattress manufacturers produce it. Over time, it has been replaced by polyurethane foam, which has greater elasticity and higher density, preventing the mattress from deforming. This is a good choice for your baby. Avoid baby mattresses with memory foam, because the head can sink into it and breathing may become difficult.
4. Mattress cover
Be sure to choose mattresses with antibacterial textiles, bamboo treatment, cotton covers, or aloe vera covers, which soothe the skin and do not irritate it.
An important addition to a baby mattress is a set of protectors. In most cases, they are waterproof and prevent the mattress from getting wet in the event of spills. They should also be made from 100% cotton and should not cause irritation or allergies.
