If you've recently had to choose or are currently looking for a new mattress, you've probably come across the terms single-sided and double-sided mattress. Many people think this is an extra feature of the mattress, but in reality, it defines its type.
These terms indicate whether the mattress has a built-in bed frame or if it needs to be placed on a separate one.
Single-sided mattresses:
You can only sleep on one side of them. Generally, single-sided mattresses have a frame that is part of the mattress itself and is placed directly into the bed cavity. If you are looking for a good mattress at a low price, single-sided mattresses will offer you exactly that, plus a built-in bed frame. Most often, these mattresses are used temporarily for rental properties, country houses, or guest rooms, due to their shorter period of use before a new one needs to be purchased.
How do you know when your single-sided mattress needs to be replaced?
When you sit on the edge of the bed, the mattress should not sink in a "smile" shape. If you feel the springs, which are often part of single-sided mattresses, that's your signal that it's time for a new mattress.

Double-sided mattresses:
Double-sided mattresses, on the other hand, are designed for use with a bed frame, which is a separate accessory and must be purchased additionally. You can sleep on both sides of them, but the feel and firmness of these two sides are usually different. Investing in a quality mattress means you will use it for at least 10 years. During this time, you may need or prefer different firmness. By flipping the mattress, you extend its life and provide yourself with a different feel.
Advantages of both types of mattresses:
With single-sided mattresses, you only have one side with a fixed firmness and feel. Their advantage is the built-in frame, which saves a significant amount from purchasing a bed frame (between 80 and 500 levs depending on the frame class).
The warranty on single-sided mattresses is shorter because they cannot be rotated, which would extend their life.
Most double-sided mattresses offer different comfort on both sides, making them multifunctional and preferred by people who like to experiment. Their warranty is often over 20 years, as you can periodically flip them to maintain the same level of comfort as on the day of purchase for a longer time.
Another extra feature of double-sided mattresses is the winter and summer side: the summer side has either cooling foam or a more breathable fabric, while the winter side has either memory foam or wool in the fabric.
With double-sided mattresses, it is more likely to find a zipper on the cover so it can be washed.
